Milan Tourist Tax - what is it and how to calculate it

On June 11^th, 2012 the City Council introduced the tourist tax, that applies to non-city residents staying at hotels and at all other accommodation facilities within Milan.

The tax, in force since September 1^st 2012, applies to each guest and is a fixed rate that varies depending on the type and number of stars of the accommodation facility.

These are the fees charged by the City:

Via Domus falls into the category of "other facilities", so our guests will pay 1 € per person per night, if reductions and exemptions don’t apply.

REDUCTIONS AND EXEMPTIONS

There will be a 50% reduction during low season, in July and August and in the second half of December until January 10^th, while during major fairs and conferences there could be a reduction of 20% if the accomodating facility lowers the prices of the rooms by at least 25%.

The tax is not due by the following:

a) guests under 18 years of age
b) visitors under 30 years of age staying at Youth Hostels with acknowledged social, educational and cultural finalities
c) family members and/or companions, during hospitalizations within the Milan Province. Exemptions will be granted upon presentation of a self-certified declaration that the stay is motivated by the need to assist the hospitalized person
d) persons who have been hospitalized and continue therapy in medical facilities within the Milan Province, and their helpers
e) persons staying at Residenze Turistico Alberghiere for each night exceeding the 14th of their stay
f) Police and Armed Forces servicemen on duty
g) university students under 26 staying at University boarding houses, student halls or RTAs
h) disabled persons and their helpers.
